Firms in the dark over IT skill levels

August 2nd, 2006

Since this article appeared almost two years ago I wonder what has changed? From talking with people very little it would seem. Why do companies complain about skills but do nothing about it? It’s so easy. It just takes committment to the employees instead of the bottom line. Take care of the skills in the business and the bottom line will grow on its own - faster too!

Curricula vitae

July 31st, 2006

Over the last 20 years I’ve seen literally thousands and thousands of cv pass across my desk. Not really surprising as I spent a long time in recruitment. What still astonshes me are two things:

  1. The general quality of people’s CV
  2. The amount of ‘poetic licence’ used

A CV is your marketing material to sell yourself. Most look like they’ve been written in 3 minutes flat. With ammendments to fit the role applied to. And it shows.

Most recruitments agencies aren’t much better with CV. A large proprotion of them typex out the name and address and then fax it their clients doing zero or little to earn their commissions. Or they retype it into ‘their’ standard format and try to align the content to the role. So clients get multiple cvs from the same person from different sources and each cv is not only presented differently it contains differing content!

As I find some classics I’ll post some of the claims made up here. Feel free to post up some of the comments you’ve seen on CV.
